The Defense Dept. says it will deploy 1,000 additional troops to the Middle East to bolster defensive capabilities in the region, reports NBC News.
Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan said on Monday that the move came in response to a request by U.S. Central Command for increased air, naval and ground-based capabilities.
Recent attacks by Iran on U.S. interests in the region necessitated the deployment, said Shanahan.
